Pupils of the 10th grade of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Taldykorgan are exploring a new type of wheat, considering the influence of genes on the level of ear productivity.
Since 2017, NIS Taldykorgan has been successfully implementing the “Working with Scientists” project. Under the tutoring of scientists from leading Kazakh universities such as KazNU, Nazarbayev University, as well as Belarus, students developed and defended a number of scientific works.
So, this time, young innovators of the Intellectual School began work on researching and breeding a new variety of wheat, as well as studying methods of accelerated selection. The leader was Kanat Ermekbaev, a scientist at Zhetysu University named after Ilyas Zhansugurov.
There are six students working on the project in a team. Today, the guys are studying DNA based on the allelic combination of chromosomes 5A and 6A. It is worth noting that at the Zhetysu University named after Ilyas Zhansugurov, the city of Taldykorgan has already received the first wheat harvest in 60 days using the latest plant breeding method such as “Speed Breeding” and “molecular selection”.
