School history

 

“Nazarbayev Intellectual school of Science and Mathematics in Semey”, branch of Autonomous Educational organization “Nazarbayev Intellectual schools”., was opened on the initiative of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.A. Nazarbayev on September 1, 2009.

At the moment, about 799 students of grades 7 to 12 study at the school. 18 trained teachers at the international level in Great Britain, USA, Singapore, Poland, Finland, South Korea, China, Greece, and Malaysia.

In 2016, our school moved to a new building. This was not only a significant milestone for our school but also a special moment in the city's history. The relocation of the school contributed to the development of the new "Қарағайлы" district on the city's map. The new building, which includes a dormitory for 136 students, has provided new educational opportunities for children from remote areas.

 

NIS Semey was accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) on May 24, 2017. CIS -  that is the main organization in the field of international education for the accreditation of schools, promotion of higher standards and latest achievements in the field of education. The school became a member of the CIS and confirmed its compliance with international standards in terms of school life and learning process. Joining the CIS community opens up broad prospects for the development and continuous improvement for the school. This, in turn, proves that the school strives to achieve the highest quality of education.  

In the 2016-2017 academic year, our institution reached an international level by establishing connections with partner schools. In 2017, we formed a partnership with the JBSN International Baccalaureate (IB) School in Mumbai, India, and in 2019, with the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Additionally, we have signed bilateral memorandums of understanding with a number of educational institutions, including the ZfA international German organization, the Goethe Institute, the Moscow Economic School in Russia, Shakarim University in Semey, Semey Medical University, and the M. Auezov Pedagogical College.

The educational program considers age-specific characteristics of students, it aims to develop skills in critical thinking and self-education. The program is aimed at development of three languages (Kazakh, Russian, and English). As part of the implementation of the policy of trilingual education, a number of subjects are taught in Kazakh, Russian or English, irregardless of the language of instruction.

A model of Multilingual education policy is effectively functioning at NIS  PhM in Semey developed with the participation of international experts.With regard to the learning of a second foreign language, NIS students may choose between its options. Second language course options are: French, Chinese, German and Korean languages.

The school has a dormitory for 136 students. The dormitory mainly hosts students from rural areas. The school provides the conditions for safe and comfortable learning and living in the dormitory on weekdays and weekends.               

Important steps:

  • In 2014, school graduates for the first time in the history of education of the Republic of Kazakhstan became the holders of the Cambridge International Examination Council certificate based on the results of external summative assessment.

  • It was this year that the school received the diploma "Best Olympic School of the Year" from the founder of the educational project "Teacher's House of the Ural Federal District", Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation.

  • In 2018, according to the results of external summative assessment, the school took 1st place in the AEO Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools rating (final assessment of 12th grade students).

  • Since February 2017, we have been candidates for membership of UNESCO Associated Schools.

  • Having endured 4 years of candidate experience, since 2021 our school has become a full member of UNESCO associated schools.

  • In 2021, the teacher of physics, Zhumabekov A.S., entered the top 50 teachers of the world to determine the winners of the Global Teacher Prize of the Varka Foundation Global Teacher Prize.

  • In 2022, for the best results in the final stage of the republican Olympiad in general education subjects, our school was awarded the title of "Best Olympic School" and won the III place.
