HISTORY
NAZARBAYEV INTELLECTUAL SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS in ORAL (further NIS S&M in Uralsk) is an organization of secondary education. It started its work on October 1, 2018, within the framework of the state program “Twenty Intellectual Schools of the First President”. It is located in the center of the West Kazakhstan region. In May 2018, the school successfully passed the international accreditation of the Council of International Schools (CIS, the Netherlands), confirming its compliance with international standards for organizing school life and for its educational process. The school is also a member of the UNESCO club.
Material and technical base:
NIS S&M in Uralsk is designed for 600 students. The school building consists of 17 blocks, in which there are 54 classrooms, 19 of which can accommodate 24 students, and a further 35 facilitate 12 students each. In addition, there are laboratories for nano and biotechnologies, classrooms for mathematics, robotics, physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as rooms for individual studies and psychological relaxation, and an outdoor greenhouse. The library is located on the first floor of the school building. The reading room can accommodate up to 60 people with an open-access book fund, a book depository for 41,000 items, an area for working with a catalogue, and a zone for issuing and receiving books. The media library provides free access for users to the EBSCO database, as well as to all information resources (“Twig-Bilim”, “BilimLand”, etc.). An assembly hall of 350 seats adjoins the general school centre, which is intended as a universal hall and can be used as both a lecture and choreographic theatre. The school dormitory is the first in the NIS AEO network and is designed to house 129 students.
Teaching staff:
124 teachers of Nazarbayev Intellectual school who graduated from local universities are aware of their responsibility in education and develop students’ intellectual and creative potential. The school employs four international teachers. All teachers are certified specialists and holders of various certificates in the subject areas. In addition, science teachers are developing subject glossaries, a database of valuable links and digital resources platform. Furthermore, international teachers share their experience in pilot city and region schools, conducting seminars, training, and master classes for teachers.
Lesson Study and Action Research are among the most effective NIS teachers’ constant professional growth and skills improvement methods.
For distribution of NIS experience and program of the updated content of education, school teachers posted over 3000 materials on the school’s database (www.smk.edu.kz). More than 80 teachers are the authors of methodological collections, and more than 100 teachers are the authors of scientific articles.
Graduates:
For the period from 2014 to 2021, about 700 students graduated from the school, of which 80% of graduates chose engineering and technical specialties, 15% – medical and 5% – humanitarian and creative specialties. Some of the graduates are already working in domestic and international companies. One hundred thirty-one school graduates became students of foreign higher educational institutions, 149 entered Nazarbayev University and 409 entered other prestigious universities of Kazakhstan. There is a positive trend in IELTS results – the international exam in English. In the 2020-2021 academic year, the average score was 6.7 points.
On May 12, 2012, during his working trip to West Kazakhstan region, the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Elbasy, Nursultan Nazarbayev visited NIS PhM in Uralsk while it was under construction.
Partnership:
The school successfully interacts with boarding school No.2 of the Tatar Republic, a secondary boarding school named after. N.I. Lobachevsky, school-gymnasium No.67 in Nur-Sultan, with five schools for gifted children in Uralsk (“Bestik odak” memorandum) and the regional department of education. Areas of work on the experience sharing: seminars and masterclasses for teachers of schools in the region, students of the National Center for Advanced Studies “Orleu”, internships for school principals, seminars for librarians, psychologists, curators and educators of educational institutions of the region. As part of the “30 Pilot Schools” program, mentoring was organized for secondary school No.30 named after. M. Ikhsanov in Uralsk and Chagan secondary school in Terektinsky district. The work is underway within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation with several state, non-state and social institutions.
Teaching and educational process:
The school is implementing the project “Individual Development Trajectory of 7-8th Grade Students”, aimed at supporting newly arrived intellectuals in participating in Olympiads and competitions and choosing a profession during their studies in high school.
NIS PhM in Uralsk has been awarded the title of “Best Olympic School” for three years in the humanities. Students win prizes in various international, republican, regional competitions and regional festivals; successfully defend scientific projects in international competitions. Namely, Aziz Talapov, a student, received a patent and registered the copyright for his project “Uninterruptible Power Supply System for Consumers at Bus Stops”.
In 2013, the Robotics club began its work at Nazarbayev Intellectual School. The performance at the World Robot Olympiad 2013 (Jakarta, Indonesia) consolidated our team’s success and has made it possible for AEO “Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools” to receive the status of WRO national coordinator since 2014. Also, the first Olympiad in robotics among NIS was held at the Intellectual School of PhM in Uralsk. As a part of the Kazakhstan national team, students participated in competitions in Russia, the Republic of Qatar, India, Costa Rica, Thailand and Hungary, having won prizes at the international level. In 2019, the school’s robotics team, which scored the most significant number of prizes in the team event, became the winner of the National Robotics Championship.
The school applies various successful educational projects to develop values such as responsibility, respect, lifelong learning, cooperation and openness. The school community makes a significant contribution to the work of these projects, which are part of contemporary education. One of such projects is “Service to the Society”, the participants of which collaborate with social institutions of the West Kazakhstan region. As part of this project, students from the school dormitory created over 70 audio recordings and tactile books for their friends from a special boarding school for visually impaired children.
“Gazhaiyp” school dance club has been twice awarded the title of “Constellation of Vienna” (Austria) laureate in the international competition, twice won the Grand Prix in “Talents of Kazakhstan” international competition in Almaty and is a laureate of various republican competitions. All 7th-grade students have been obligatory attending dombra lessons.
As part of the additional education program, there is a pottery club intended to boost students’ interest in folk crafts, develop pottery skills and the skills of making clay products. In addition, students with special needs from regional educational institutions visit pottery classes weekly.
Sports achievements:
There are various sports clubs at school, such as basketball, volleyball, football, kazaksha kures, Greco-Roman wrestling, togyzkumalak, chess, table tennis, asyk, and fitness. Altyn Urpak project has been implemented in 2020 to promote the national sport Kazakh Kures, so Grade 7 boys have an opportunity to study the history of this sport and master its basic techniques two times a week. Young athletes are winners of the republican championships in chess, Kyokushinkai-kan, table tennis, togyzkumalak. The school youth basketball team won the silver medal in the 2019 network sports contest.
