On June 4, 2024, Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Astana signed a memorandum of cooperation with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (The Chinese University of Hong Kong). As part of this significant event, the school was visited by a team of scientists and researchers from this university, who have been studying higher education in the countries of the "One Belt, One Road" initiative since 2017. They are currently working on a project proposal entitled "Where Convergence Occurs: Kazakhstani Students seek Higher Education Abroad", submitted for application for the 2024/25 academic year to the General Research Fund (GRF) of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC). The main goal of the project is to understand the needs and characteristics of Kazakhstani students who intend to pursue higher education abroad, as well as to understand the policy of universities and the Government of Kazakhstan regarding studying abroad. In addition, the project aims to explore the possibilities of cooperation between universities and government agencies between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan. The members of the research team are Professor Alan K.K. Chung, Principal Investigator from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Fan-sing Hung from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Jin Liu from the Beijing Institute of Technology and Dr. Aohua Ni from Peking University. The main objectives of their visit to our school were to explore the possibilities of establishing mutually beneficial cooperation between our educational institution and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, to familiarize our educational institution with the possibilities of studying abroad and the resources available at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. There were also brief focus group interviews with our students and teachers regarding the goals of the project. The meeting was supervised by Zhamilya Zhirenova, a graduate of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Astana in 2018, who is currently studying at the doctoral program of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. We hope that this cooperation will open up new horizons for our students and will contribute to the development of educational and research ties between Kazakhstan and Hong Kong.
