On July 5, NIS Astana–Nura hosted the official opening ceremony of the VIII International Young Geologists Field Olympiad.
This year, the Olympiad has brought together ten of the strongest teams from across Kazakhstan, as well as teams from Belarus, the Russian Federation, and Uzbekistan. Throughout the Olympiad, young geologists will compete in a range of practical disciplines, exchange knowledge and experience, and explore the latest developments in the field of geology.
The opening ceremony was attended by Yerlan Akbarov, Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Kanat Sharlapayev, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Chamber of Entrepreneurs "Atameken"; Sabyrzhan Saduakasov, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of the Autonomous Educational Organization "Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools"; Guldana Sadvakasova, Director of the Department of Educational Work of the Autonomous Educational Organization "Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools"; Svetlana Yashina, Chairperson of the Central Council of the Russian Federation's Children's and Youth Geological Movement; as well as representatives of government agencies, the scientific community, leading mining companies, higher education institutions, and international organizations.
The opening ceremony held special significance as it took place on National Dombra Day and on the eve of the Capital City Day. The dombra is not only a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the Kazakh people but also a spiritual link between generations. Holding the International Olympiad during these festive days highlights Kazakhstan's hospitality and the unique atmosphere of its capital.
The Olympiad's practical program includes competitions in geological mapping, geological cross-sections, mineralogy and petrography, paleontology, hydrology, magnetometry, oil and gas exploration, heavy mineral sampling, field camp organization, and occupational health and safety. This format enables students not only to demonstrate their practical knowledge but also to gain a deeper understanding of the geology profession, learn from leading industry experts, and build new international connections.
