Scientific Achievement: NIS Students Receive Patent for a Useful Model
05 June 2025 14:58
Scientists and students of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics (NIS) in Astana have been granted a patent for a useful model based on the results of their research work.
Our 12th-grade students, Nikole Ermolayeva and Malika Telegenova, successfully completed the academic year and, after several years of research, developed a method for producing bacterial cellulose. The proposed biodegradable material is based on bacterial cellulose ((C6H10O5)n) synthesized by the tea fungus (Medusomyces Gisevi) and serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic materials. Bacterial cellulose is a microbial polysaccharide composed of cellulose fibers produced by the non-pathogenic microorganism Acetobacter aceti. This material possesses high physicochemical properties: it significantly reduces the release of toxic substances into the environment and ensures safe food storage by creating micro-anaerobic conditions and effectively retaining moisture. The use of this material greatly decreases environmental pollution and enhances food safety during storage.
It is worth noting that last year, our students Nikole and Malika were awarded a gold medal at the network stage of the Republican «Daryn» competition for this research. Additionally, their project was recognized as the «Best Environmental Project» at the International Forum of Young Scientists – an event that brings together young researchers and students from universities and scientific organizations worldwide. We express our gratitude to the young scientists and their academic supervisors – Master of Natural Sciences Elmira Kosakhmetova and Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Ainur Kydyrmoldina – for their significant contribution to the development of domestic science and innovation!
