Safety Video Monitoring: Aktobe Teachers Developed a System to Ensure Student Safety
06 December 2024 16:15
Teachers from the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Aktobe have designed a system to ensure the safety of students at school. The system involves a video monitoring system installed at the entrances to school restrooms.
This project won the grand prize at the "Smart City" hackathon held at the Aqtobe Hub platform. The development was created by NIS computer science teachers Bakyt Gaisagaliyeva, Nurlibay Uzakbayev, Akzhol Kasanov, Bakhytzhan Abylkhatov, and Bauyrzhan Shokanov.
“We’ve frequently heard and witnessed incidents of fights in school restrooms across the country. Sometimes, these altercations result in tragic consequences. As teachers, this issue deeply concerns us. That’s why we decided to install safety video monitoring systems at restroom entrances. Currently, we plan to improve the algorithm further. If the project is implemented, we believe it will help prevent offenses among teenagers,” said the teachers.
The system consists of a video camera and an alarm device connected to a single server. If a student inside the restroom feels threatened, they can press the alarm button to request help. Additionally, the video camera counts the number of students entering the restroom and records footage. If the number of students gathered at one time exceeds the set limit (5–6 students), the system automatically sends a signal to responsible personnel.
The "Smart City" hackathon lasted 48 hours, during which the teachers completed the project within two days. A total of 31 teams participated, submitting 13 projects aimed at improving Aktobe's infrastructure and enhancing residents' quality of life.
The winning team of NIS computer science teachers, known as "Infinite Loopers," received an additional incentive prize of 500,000 tenge.
