The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, hosted the prestigious International Geography Olympiad (IGeO), bringing together more than 200 talented students from 47 countries around the world.

Representing Team Kazakhstan this year was Alikhan Kalmagambetov, a 12th-grade student at Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Aktobe. Alikhan earned a silver medal, demonstrating outstanding knowledge and skills in geography.

The competition consisted of three challenging stages: a written theoretical test, multimedia-based tasks, and a practical fieldwork round.

Alikhan had earlier excelled in the national selection process alongside top NIS students from Kostanay, Taldykorgan, and Karaganda. This isn’t his first international success — he was also a bronze medalist at the European Geography Olympiad (EGEO-2025).

First held in 1996, the IGeO aims to foster young people's interest in geography and the environment, develop scientific thinking, and promote global educational and cultural collaboration.

Notably, the national team’s coach this year was Rustam Valeev, a graduate of NIS Aktobe. In 2021, Rustam won Kazakhstan’s first gold medal at IGeO, and now mentors the next generation of talented students.

Congratulations to Alikhan and his mentors on this remarkable achievement! We wish you continued success and new victories ahead!
