27 January 2025 17:10
Within the framework of the teacher professional development programme, the Intellectual School of Chemistry and Biology of Almaty held an internship for teachers of the reference school named after Turar Ryskulov, in Uzynagash village, Zhambyl district. The main theme of the internship was ‘Development through lesson study - the basis of professional development’. This approach, based on the Lesson Study methodology, is actively used in NIS and is proposed for implementation in the educational process of the reference school.
Objectives and goals of the internship
One of the key objectives of the internship is to further familiarise the teachers of the support school with Lesson Study methods and the possibilities of their application in educational practice. In the course of the event, teachers were able to observe open lessons conducted by teachers of the support school and evaluate how modern pedagogical methods are applied to improve the educational process.
The lesson study methodology, which is an important element of the NIS curriculum, focuses on analysing the lesson to identify teaching strengths, as well as adjusting and improving those elements that need improvement. This method not only helps teachers to improve their professional skills, but also helps to develop students' research, logical and analytical abilities.
Lesson observation and feedback
An important stage of the internship was the observation of lessons of the reference school teachers. NIS experts assessed how teachers applied lesson study methods in practice. Special attention was paid to aspects such as lesson structure, ways of motivating students, and methods of differentiating instruction.
The feedback provided to teachers after the observation allowed them to identify key points that could be improved in their practice. Experts shared their recommendations on how lesson study methods could be more effectively applied, as well as how to improve interactions with students to create conditions for their active participation in the learning process.
Panel sessions and workshops
After lesson observations, the internship continued with panel sessions and workshops. NIS educators shared modern educational methods such as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) and PBL (project-based learning). The focus was on how these methods help develop students' analytical, logical, synthetic and research skills.
Practical masterclasses
An important part of the internship was the practical masterclasses, where participants learnt various teaching methods and strategies. For example, at a workshop on STEAM lessons, Kazakh language and literature teacher R. Iskakova demonstrated how to integrate literary works into interdisciplinary lessons aimed at developing students' critical thinking.History teacher Kulikenova G.H. told about PhBL (phenomena-based learning), which helps develop students' problem-solving skills relevant to the 21st century. Also, teacher Bokhanova N.S. showed the algorithm of writing a scientific article, which gave teachers a practical understanding of how to work with scientific research and projects.
Conclusion
The internship organised for the teachers of the reference school was another important step in sharing experience and introducing new pedagogical methods into the educational practice of rural schools. After lesson observations, the internship continued with panel sessions and workshops.NIS educators shared modern educational methods such as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) and PBL (project-based learning).
