Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Science and Mathematics in Nauryzbay district of Almaty celebrates its 10th anniversary

The Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Science and Mathematics in Almaty–Nauryzbay has celebrated its 10th anniversary. As part of the юбилей celebrations, an exhibition of scientific, environmental, and artistic projects was organized, research teachers presented their work, and a ceremonial anniversary concert was held.

Distinguished guests of the event included members of the School’s Board of Trustees—Rector of KBTU Maratbek Gabdullin, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Otbasy Bank Nurlan Akshanov, members of the Management Board of AEO “Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools,” principals of all 22 Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools across the country, and representatives of leading universities of Almaty.

The Chairman of the Management Board of AEO “Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools,” Anuar Zhangozin, presented certificates of appreciation to teachers who have been working at the school since its opening.

Over the past decade, the school has confidently established itself as a leading educational institution, becoming a CIS member school and gaining international recognition. A total of 1,186 students have graduated from NIS Almaty–Nauryzbay. The geography of alumni education is extensive, including higher education university in the United States, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Italy, South Korea, Germany, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Canada, the Czech Republic, Russia, and other countries. More than 200 graduates were admitted to Nazarbayev University, while 450 continue their studies at other leading universities in Kazakhstan.

A 2002 graduate, Ramina Askarova, made history as the first alumnus of the school to enter the Ivy League. The gifted student received a full scholarship from one of the leading U.S. institutions, Dartmouth College. A 2024 graduate, Ilyas Muslimkhan, was awarded a full scholarship by the University of Chicago, ranked among the top five universities in the United States.

The first generation of graduates is now contributing to the development of the Republic in the fields of economics, education, IT, science, and business.

The core principle of the Intellectual School is:

This principle is demonstrated every year by the dedication of our teachers.

Teachers annually present their research at international ESER and WALS forums. The poster by biology teacher Gulmira Bessenbayeva was recognized as the best at ECER 2023 among 3,500 participants from 80 countries. Educators Dana Baidildinova, Zaure Dilmanova, Sholpan Abisheva were awarded the title “Best Teacher of Kazakhstan,” and chemistry teacher Sholpan Abisheva was honored with the Order of Qurmеt.

Students of the school consistently achieve high results in network, national, and international Olympiads. Over 10 years, NIS has accumulated 410 network-level, 366 national, and 159 international awards. A major global achievement was the victory of the PID team at the FIRST Championship 2025 in the United States, where young engineers won gold and silver medals.

Enlik Bakytbekova, a three-time winner of the national Daryn Olympiad and a recipient of gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Mendeleev and “TUYMAADA” International Olympiads, became a silver medalist at the prestigious 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2025) in the anniversary year. As one of the top Olympiad students of the country, Enlik was received by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who congratulated the gifted student and presented commemorative gifts.

As part of the project “Developing the Capacity of Rural Hub Schools,” NIS Almaty–Nauryzbay organizes internships at the school for teachers and librarians from three regional hub schools. In addition, off-site seminars on subject knowledge, research skills, and functional literacy are conducted for subject teachers and psychologists of hub schools.
