School History

The Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Medeu District of Almaty opened its doors on September 1, 2014. The school’s mission is to provide high-quality education in Kazakh, Russian, and English, ensuring that students are well-prepared for integration into the global educational community. To achieve this goal, a trilingual education program has been implemented.

The curriculum was developed in collaboration with the school’s strategic partner, the University of Cambridge, and is delivered under the “NIS-Programme”, which integrates both national and international standards.

Infrastructure

The school consists of seven blocks and includes 81 classrooms, modern subject-specific rooms and laboratories, STEM and robotics centers, a television studio, an assembly hall, psychological support rooms, and a greenhouse designed in national style.
The library holds works of world and Kazakh classics within the framework of the “100 Books” project. In addition, students have access to the TWIG online platform, which offers over 1,500 educational films in three languages on science subjects.

Achievements

Today, more than 1,000 students study at the school, guided by highly qualified teachers – doctors of science, master’s degree holders, and graduates of leading international programs.

  • In 2018, the school received accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS).

  • In 2019, it obtained national accreditation.

  • The average IELTS score of graduates is 7.2.

  • Between 2015 and 2022, the school was recognized as the “Best Olympiad School of Physics and Mathematics.”

  • Over the past 10 years, students have won 778 awards at national and international Olympiads.

The robotics team has become a three-time world champion, winning gold medals at the First Global Challenge in Geneva (2022), Singapore (2023), and Athens (2024). Furthermore, NIS students were winners of the prestigious NASA Space Settlement Contest for three consecutive years – 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Alumni

In the past decade, more than 1,300 graduates have completed their studies at NIS Almaty-Medeu. Among them are students of Harvard, MIT, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, and Williams College. Many others continue their education at leading universities in Kazakhstan and abroad.

Values

In addition to academic excellence, the school places strong emphasis on the development of leadership, creativity, and athletic skills. More than 20 clubs and organizations operate to support students’ personal growth.
